Valentina Lesnova [Ukraine]

Valentina Lesnova, born in 1964 in the city of Kommunarsk (now Alchevsk) in the region of Luhansk, began studying at the department of philology at the »Taras Shevchenko« State Pedagogical Institute in Luhansk in 1981, with a focus on Ukrainian language and literature. After her graduation in 1986, she worked as a Ukrainian language and literature teacher and switched to Taras Shevchenko University in Luhansk in 1987. She worked there as an instructor in 2001 before assuming the position of associate professor at the Institute of Ukrainian Philology and General Linguistics. Valentina Lesnova has served as department head at the university since 2014.

In 1999 she wrote her dissertation on the Ukrainian dialects in the Eastern Provinces. Valentina Lesnova has written more than 80 scientific papers as well as pedagogical and methodological textbooks and dictionaries. One of her publications is a collection of the surnames of residents of Luhansk (2010), several studies deal with the Ukrainian dialects, and Lesnova is also co-author of a book on the historical grammar of the Ukrainian language (2008; 2012).

In September 2014, in connection with the Russian aggressions in East Ukraine, she moved together with the university to Starobilsk in the Luhansk region.
