Reading with Sema Kaygusuz [ Turkey ]

Memory is the main topic in Kaygusuz’s latest novel »Yüzünde Bir Yer« (Engl: »A Place on your Face«). It’s about vague memories like her own mother’s thoughts before she was born, but also about very concrete moments such as her grandmother’s phrase about the carnage of Dersim in 1938: »They slaughtered us« – three words that branded the narrator like a mark in the face. Kaygu suz’s language is deep and chrystal clear, and shows the transi tion between holy and profane, between tradition and supersti tion. It is a novel about Anatolia and its legendary heritage, where drama and misery have always been underneath the surface.
