Elena Karakina, born in Odessa in 1957, is a philologist, local historian, essayist, and scientific secretary of the Odessa Literature Museum. She has written a series of books about Odessa as well as articles and essays that have been published in national and foreign newspapers and magazines. She was also the co-author of a city guide on Jewish Odessa and for a decade wrote a column for a Jewish newspaper in Odessa, which was also later published in a collected volume.
